How much private and transit traffic can the Alpine region actually handle? And who pays the price for it? More traffic means not only convenience, freedom of choice and economic dynamism, but also more noise, poorer air quality, land consumption and a profound impact on the everyday lives of local residents. While visitors, goods and commuters cover ever greater distances at ever faster speeds, good quality of life, peace and space in the "Alpine transit corridor" are becoming increasingly scarce. On top of that, more roads and railway lines are cutting through wildlife habitats.
Join us at the specialist conference "Getting Things Moving – Rethinking Mobility in the Alps" to discuss what strategies and solutions are needed to make mobility more compatible with the needs of local communities and ecosystems. How do we move from familiar proposals to effective measures, rather than staying stuck at the planning stage? Is building new (base) tunnels enough? What political, logistical and economic frameworks are still needed for the actual shift of freight transport to rail? And how do we get commuters and travellers to not just talk about alternative mobility, but actually use it? What practical everyday options and convincing incentive systems are needed to encourage the switch from car to train, bus or bicycle?
