The World Wetlands Day is observed annually on 2 February to mark the Ramsar Convention, which was signed in 1971 at the initiative of UNESCO. It raises awareness of the need to protect bogs, floodplains, and mangroves. This year's theme is: "It's Time to Restore Wetlands!".
Wetlands are among the most species-rich, yet also the most severely threatened ecosystems in the world. Every year on 2 February, World Wetlands Day draws attention to their importance and to the Ramsar Convention. This convention is a global agreement whose aim is the protection and sustainable use ("wise use") of wetlands. Further priorities include communication and education about the significance of wetlands, as well as international cooperation in this area.
