DOSSIER: A Journalism Workshop for the Climate Change Centre Austria

What makes a good story? How do you nail a gripping opening? And how do you write engagingly about a seemingly dry topic? In the writing workshop, the facilitators will work together with participants on the fundamentals of journalistic writing, learning how to tell stories in a compelling and accessible way.

Alongside practical examples of good writing style, the workshop also offers tips for successful publications: the trainers will show how to structure and write a press release in a way that grabs attention and gets picked up by the media.

Programme overview:

·         Welcome and introductions
What prior experience do participants have? What positive or negative experiences with media coverage have they already had?

·         How do the media work?
To understand the so-called media logic, it helps to take a look behind the scenes: an insight into the day-to-day working life of journalists.

·         What makes a good story?
How do you create tension? How do you tell complicated stories in a simple and accessible way?

·         Writing workshop and storytelling: Do's and Don'ts
Good storytelling is a craft that can be learnt: an overview of the most important tools.

·         How do you turn data into stories?
Data journalism is one of the biggest trends in the media industry — and it opens up new opportunities for collaboration with the scientific community.

·         How do you write a professional press release?
Reaching your target audience with press releases isn't easy — but following a few simple rules can significantly improve your chances.
