87 per cent of Austrians expect little from the climate conference

The majority don't believe climate change can still be brought under control. But more than a third are convinced that humanity can live well even with a temperature rise of over three degrees. This is what a recent study by ÖAW shows.

A majority of 87 per cent of Austrians don't believe that the UN Climate Conference in Dubai will produce any results. Accordingly, interest in it is also quite low: almost three quarters of those surveyed have little interest in it. And 39 per cent even believe that humanity could live well even if global average temperatures rise above 3 degrees. This is the finding of a recent special survey conducted as part of the new Science Barometer of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).

Whilst the topic of climate change has certainly reached the Austrian public and only a minority doubt that it is man-made, 40 per cent of the population still think there are more pressing problems for Austria. Only one in five clearly puts climate change in first place. Overall, climate change comes in fourth place out of six topics surveyed, behind the health and care system and poverty reduction. Only migration and education rank further behind.
