88 per cent of Austrians are calling on the government to present a clear plan for binding climate protection

Vienna (OTS) - Representative survey is a clear mandate to policymakers to implement the Climate People's Initiative – the public is calling for binding emissions reductions, an eco-social tax reform and an independent climate oversight council.

An overwhelming majority of 88 per cent of people in Austria are demanding a clear plan and binding measures from policymakers on how CO2 emissions should be reduced annually. This is shown by a representative survey by the market research institute Marketagent. More than 90% of voters in Austria are in favour of an eco-social tax reform. According to three quarters of Austrians, climate-damaging behaviour should be given an appropriate price, whilst climate-damaging subsidies should be abolished. The survey results once again confirm the broad public support for climate protection.

In line with these figures, the Climate People's Initiative is once again calling for its demands to be implemented with a resolution by the Environment Committee on 9 March. Concrete measures should be taken before the summer.
"The message from the public is unambiguous and can no longer be ignored!", comments Katharina Rogenhofer, spokesperson for the Climate People's Initiative, on the current survey. "The ÖVP announced the greening of the tax and economic system in government. Now it's time to turn that promise into action. That's what the public wants and that's what the business community wants. Everyone is waiting for the government to finally move from words to deeds!"
