A global 24-hour hackathon for urban climate innovation – for the first time in Austria

From 19–20 October 2017, CCCA is organising the first competition of its kind at TU Graz.

The Climathon is a worldwide 24-hour climate hackathon. In more than 100 cities across six continents, entrepreneurs, students, pupils, programmers and political decision-makers come together to work on new, creative solutions to local problems related to climate change.

The Climathon is your chance to develop local solutions to one of the most pressing problems of our time through an innovation process. So far, we've been supporting cities such as Zürich, Berlin, Karlsruhe, Essen and Frankfurt am Main in rolling out the Climathon  in their city with other partners.

Teams tackle local challenges caused by climate change

A small selection of local Climathon challenges in 2017

  • Berlin: Climate protection and energy saving – what incentives could look like for private households in Berlin?
  • Zürich: How can residents contribute to climate-friendly urban planning?
  • Karlsruhe: How can we engage students at Karlsruhe's universities as knowledge-sharers and multipliers on the topic of climate protection (»climate protection ambassadors«)?
  • Essen: Smart commuting – how can sustainable transport options to and from the workplace be promoted?
  • Frankfurt/Main: Culture shift: single-use mania or reusable trend? What could an attractive reusable system for »coffee-to-go« cups look like?

A local Climathon solution

Challenge:
At the 2017 Climathon, the city of Zürich wanted to find out, amongst other things, how residents could contribute to climate-friendly urban planning.

Solution: Felix & DuDa
With »Felix & DuDa«, the city of Zürich receives information on local climate and environmental conditions, such as subjectively perceived air quality, noise and odour pollution, as well as direct suggestions for improvement from users of an app.

To do this, app users share their current location and answer questions about it – for example, how clean, loud or pleasant they find the place. In doing so, they not only explore their city in a new way, but can also choose from activities or products they receive free of charge as a reward for their feedback. This could be, for example, a visit to a theatre or a museum. In just 24 hours at the Climathon, the »Felix & DuDa« team not only developed the idea, but also set up a website including a prototype straight away. In the »Greenhouse«, EIT Climate-KIC's pre-incubation programme, the team continues to develop its idea, receiving support in the form of workshops and coaching sessions.

Under the umbrella of Climate KIC (<link http: www.climate>www.climate–kic.org), CCCA, the GreenTech Cluster, Science Park Graz and TU Graz are jointly organising the first Climathon in Graz.

Challenges will be developed over the coming weeks and will then be available to view at climathon.climate-kic.org.

The aim is to generate solutions within the 24 hours that can then be implemented by the challenge sponsors.

In addition to a prize, the winning teams will also have the opportunity to develop their idea into a business idea and work on it together with Climate KIC to bring it to life.

Participants can also register directly on the <link https: climathon.climate-kic.org external-link-new-window internal link in current>Climathon homepage.
