A matter of perspective: Women's views on climate change

The photographers Irene Barlian, Ranita Roy and Lynsey Addario reveal a female perspective on the global impacts of climate change through their photo series.

Since 1980, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award has been presented for photo series that explore the relationship between people and their environment. Under the title Women's Perspectives, the Leica Gallery Vienna will be showing the series of three finalists from 25 July: Standing on the Edge by Ranita Roy (finalist 2021), Women on the Frontline of Climate Change by Lynsey Addario (finalist 2022) and Land of the Sea by Irene Barlian (finalist 2022). All three reveal a female perspective on the global impacts of climate change.

On the Front Line

The photo series Women on the Frontline of Climate Change by Lynsey Addario puts women from different regions around the globe at the centre, who are fighting against the destruction of the environment. "I want the series to encourage people to care more about the environment and to make more conscious decisions that affect it," says the photojournalist. Born in 1973 in Westport (Connecticut), Addario has worked for the New York Times, National Geographic and Time magazine, among others. Over the past 15 years, she has reported on a wide range of conflicts and humanitarian crises, including in Afghanistan, Darfur, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Iraq, Lebanon, South Sudan and Congo.
