An underestimated danger: When heat becomes a health risk


Blue skies, summer, sunshine — under normal circumstances, all of this has a positive effect on people's mood. But when temperatures climb above 30 degrees, this fair-weather effect can turn negative and, in serious cases, pose a risk to health. Experts are critical of the fact that this risk continues to be underestimated, pointing to a lack of heat protection measures!

Whether it's Spain, Portugal, Italy or Austria — heat has a firm grip on parts of Europe. And that looks set to continue, as the climate crisis is pushing temperatures ever higher for ever longer periods. This has an impact on both physical and mental health.

Vulnerable individuals such as older people, those with cardiovascular conditions, and children have a particularly low heat tolerance — not least due to their reduced sense of thirst and limited perspiration capacity.
