Architecture reaches its limits

Weather extremes such as heatwaves are becoming more frequent due to advancing global warming — a development that also poses challenges for architects.


Providing cooling, especially in cities, is a pressing concern. The technical means to do so are available, experts say — but clever architecture alone won't be enough to tackle the consequences of the climate crisis. They are calling for a major rethink.

Large parts of Europe have already been through the second heatwave of this summer. Temperatures climbed above 40 degrees Celsius in many places, with new records set at numerous locations across the continent. People in cities are suffering particularly under the heat. In urban agglomerations, it is always several degrees warmer than in the surrounding countryside. Asphalt and concrete store heat, which is why temperatures remain high even at night.
