Austria has once again missed its climate targets. As one of the most laggardly countries in the entire EU, we've made no progress whatsoever in reducing CO2 emissions for years. Quite the opposite — the Environment Agency calculated a further increase of 1.8 per cent.
Experts, environmental and climate protection advocates are slowly despairing over empty announcement politics with no plan, no path, and no goal. The climate emergency hasn't yet registered in the minds of those responsible, even though it is Austria's stated aim to become climate-neutral by 2040.
The key figures from the GHG balance
Behind the name "Nowcast 2020" lies a forecast for the Environment Agency's annual report on air pollutant and greenhouse gas production in Austria. According to these preliminary figures, around 80.4 million tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHGs) were emitted in 2019.
Compared to 2018, this represents an increase of 1.8 per cent, or 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, for which industry and transport are primarily responsible.
