Austrians rate their country's environmental quality positively


The environmental quality in Austria is rated predominantly positively by the population. "Satisfaction with the local environment is high. Drinking water quality, the condition of lakes and rivers, as well as the quality of food and air are rated as very good or fairly good by over 90 per cent," said Statistik Austria Director General Tobias Thomas on Thursday. But nearly a quarter see climate change as the biggest environmental problem.

The availability of green spaces was rated as very good or fairly good by 78 per cent, and the noise situation by only 68.5 per cent, in the Statistik Austria Microcensus survey in the 3rd quarter of 2023. Climate change (24.3 per cent) and destruction of nature (20.2 per cent) were most frequently selected as a major environmental problem. "The topic of soil sealing was included for the first time as an additional environmental problem in the 2023 survey, and was the most pressing concern for 17.7 per cent," according to a press release.
