The statements made by Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) about tackling the climate crisis caused not only disagreement from Green Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, but also from leading climate researchers on Thursday.
In an interview with the Vorarlberger Nachrichten, Kurz had suggested that tackling climate change was possible without sacrifice — such as giving up private motorised transport — and that it was the wrong approach to believe we could save the climate through doing without. "The only right approach is to rely on innovation and technology," said Kurz.
When asked whether, as a politician, one can in good conscience tell people today that it will work without sacrifice, Kurz answered: "Yes, you can. I don't think at all that our path should lead back to the Stone Age. I'm not in favour of the constant politics of the wagging finger, nor of fantasies about somehow living as people did in the last century."
