Austria's greenhouse gases continue to fall: researchers at the University of Graz identify the causes


Climate protection is working. Austria's greenhouse gas emissions fell by 2.56 per cent from 2023 to 2024. This was announced by the Environment Agency on 13 August 2025. This marks the third consecutive year of decline. However, the reduction in 2024 was smaller than in previous years, and emissions now sit marginally above the target set in the EU agreement. Researchers at the University of Graz have analysed what drove the reduction in the previous year. Their findings show that climate protection measures account for nearly two thirds of the savings.
