Biodiversity council demands: intact nature must become a political priority

"A government programme without biodiversity is no plan for the future – protecting the foundations of our lives finally needs to be a priority."

The Austrian Biodiversity Council has published, one year after the federal government took office, its latest Biodiversity Policy Barometer — a well-founded assessment of biodiversity, environmental and nature conservation policy to date. The Barometer shows that urgent action is needed and identifies concrete measures that must be taken immediately to halt the ongoing loss of species and protect our ecosystems, thereby preserving the foundations of life for future generations.

Using five core demands with 23 sub-points, the experts analysed the government programme and political activities to date in terms of their contribution to addressing the biodiversity crisis. The current Barometer draws a sobering conclusion, however: one year after the federal government took office, no improvement can be identified in any of the areas examined. On the contrary: for the first time since the Austrian Biodiversity Policy Barometer was first published in 2019, there is not a single "green light" remaining.

"Where exactly is the federal government falling short of scientific recommendations? How large is the funding gap in biodiversity conservation? What ecological and economic damage will result if action is not taken now? What solutions does the Austrian Biodiversity Council propose?"

All of these questions are addressed in the Biodiversity Policy Barometer for Austria, published today.
