BOKU analyses food waste and, together with TU Graz, CO2 accounting in schools

On 29 October, it's International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. To reduce this at Vienna's schools, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) is now examining food waste. The city is also trialling buffet trolleys.

"Nothing left for waste" is the motto for the campaign to promote mindful food handling at Vienna's schools. To significantly reduce food waste there, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) is now carrying out waste analyses at a total of 179 public educational institutions. "This is the first time we have the opportunity to take a closer look at just how much food waste is actually generated in school catering," explains Gudrun Obersteiner from BOKU. The waste surveys will run for around a year...

A different kind of analysis is being carried out by BOKU together with TU Graz. As part of the cooperative project makingAchange on the theme of "climate change and sustainability", CO₂ accounts for schools are now being compiled for the third year running. Such a CO₂ account makes it possible to identify the biggest emissions drivers in school operations, derive the most effective climate protection measures from them, and — provided it is updated at regular intervals — measure the effectiveness of those climate protection measures.

The goal of 'mAc' is to make a contribution to the transformation of society and to integrate and normalise the themes of climate protection and sustainability as a matter of course, both in the school environment and in everyday life.

Applications for CO2 accounting are open year-round at makingachange.ccca.ac.at!
