CarbonTracer: Reliable greenhouse gas calculator for travel, based on the climate expertise of the University of Graz

The University of Graz is currently launching a unique service with regard to the greenhouse gas emissions of travel: the free CarbonTracer for mobility provides a holistic picture of travel processes and calculates emissions according to the latest scientific standards. The aim is to raise awareness of the topic and boost the success of climate protection.

The new, freely available CarbonTracer tool is based on the long-standing expertise of the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change at the University of Graz, led by the renowned climate researcher Gottfried Kirchengast.

The new web-based tool enables companies, organisations, and individuals to reliably map their private and business trips or individual travel routes in terms of the greenhouse gas emissions they generate (in kgCO2eq, kilograms of CO2 equivalent). This makes it easier to plan or retrospectively evaluate private and business journeys, and to compare commuting routes and modes of transport. CarbonTracer is based on a scientifically sound professional system that works with real trip segments, stopovers, and changes of transport mode, etc.

"We ensure a scientifically grounded and carefully maintained data quality that others cannot match. The CarbonTracer service is an essential component of the further development of our comprehensive climate protection solution approach, Carbon Management," says Gottfried Kirchengast, highlighting the advantage of the University of Graz's new service.
