How do we want to get around in the future? Where will we get our energy from? How will we eat in the future to protect the planet?" These are the kinds of questions the Austrian Climate Council will be tackling from this weekend. 100 people were randomly selected for this purpose and, supported by a scientific advisory panel, are tasked with developing proposals that will then – ideally – be taken up and implemented by policymakers.
The members of the Climate Council "will draw on their everyday experiences and their particular challenges in climate protection and work together to develop recommendations for a climate-healthy Austria", said Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) at a press conference on Tuesday. "The climate crisis affects us all, and I'm convinced that we can solve it together. I'm really looking forward to the results of the Climate Council."
The citizens selected by Statistik Austria reflect the Austrian population in terms of place of residence, age, gender, education and income. They are between 17 and 79 years old and have had their primary residence in Austria for at least five years. According to Gewessler, particular care was taken to ensure that the Climate Council doesn't only include people who are especially engaged on the issue of climate.
