Climate Caricature - On Tour: International Caricatures on Climate Change and Climate Justice

The exhibition for the "Kaktus Cartoon Award - Climate Change and Climate Justice" is touring Austria. In 2023, cartoonists from around the world were invited to submit their best works on climate change and climate justice. The response was enormous, with more than 1,700 cartoons from over 500 artists taking part in the competition. This exhibition showcases the best cartoons from all those submissions.

Through the project "Klimakarikatur on Tour", funded by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund, this exhibition is now touring Austria, stopping once in each federal state. Coordination and organisation are handled by the Klima-Plattform Österreich, the umbrella association of the Climate and Energy Model Regions (KEM for short) and Climate Change Adaptation Model Regions (KLAR! for short).
Around 200 such climate regions are actively engaging with the challenges of climate change and working to make their communities and residents fit for the future.

The cartoon is an important and effective tool for highlighting political or social grievances. Cartoons are quick to grasp, get complex issues across visually, and can also entertain through humorous and exaggerated depictions. Combining this art form with the day-to-day work of the model regions offers an exciting platform and a fresh approach to climate issues on a different level. Each venue offers a varied supporting programme during the exhibition period and invites the public to engage with the challenges of the future through the works on display.

The exhibition, with its artworks and diverse perspectives, shows once again that we are not alone in our efforts to protect the environment and keep our living spaces worth living in. The whole world is thinking about this. Whether from China or the USA, India, Russia or Ukraine, from Iran, Europe, South America, Asia, Australia or Africa — whether as cartoonists or citizens, as employees or people in leadership positions, as people in political roles or volunteers — this topic unites us all.

The respective organisers welcome climate-friendly travel to the event by public transport, by bike, or on foot, in keeping with the theme.

The touring exhibition "Klima Karikatur - On Tour" is managed by the Papplab team.
