Climate Change Adaptation Takes Centre Stage

GCA announces key adaptation initiatives at the Climate Adaptation Summit. Rotterdam, Netherlands — The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) made a series of important announcements last week during the Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS2021), hosted by the Netherlands. It was the first international summit for world leaders aimed at triggering the systemic change needed to accelerate adaptation action globally for a climate-resilient world. During the summit, the work of the GCA was supported by a number of the world's leading politicians, including Ali Bongo Odimba, President of Gabon; Nana Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana; Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada; Carlos Alvarado Quesada, President of Costa Rica; Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh; and Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya.

The summit took place as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to erode recent progress in building climate resilience, making countries and communities more vulnerable to future shocks. A GCA report, "State and Trends in Adaptation 2020", shows that global financing would need to increase tenfold to $300 billion per year to meet the estimates of the UN Environment Programme. This is necessary to respond to escalating climate risks. An accompanying technical report, "Adaptation Finance in the Context of Covid-19", estimates that funds for climate change adaptation fell by up to 10% in 2020, reversing the decades-long trend of increasing adaptation financing for developing countries.
