Climate change is affecting children's education around the world

According to a recently published UNICEF study entitled "LEARNING INTERRUPTED: Global snapshot of climate-related school disruptions in 2024", climate change is having far-reaching impacts on school operations in 85 countries. Heatwaves, droughts and floods are causing significant disruptions to education worldwide, affecting more than 240 million pupils. According to UNICEF, children and young people in countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Mozambique, Pakistan and the Philippines are the worst affected.

Of particular concern is the fact that climate change is increasingly threatening the educational opportunities of children and young people. International Education Day on 24 January was established in 2018 to promote the United Nations' education goals and highlight the importance of education for all. The UNICEF analysis underscores the urgent need to take action to protect educational institutions and opportunities from the impacts of the climate crisis.
