Climate debate: destructive arguments on the rise


How the debate on climate policy in Austria developed in 2024 compared to 2023 is the subject of the "climate discourse monitoring" report. The conclusion of the analysis of Austrian media: while the climate debate is predominantly constructive, a year-on-year comparison reveals an increase in destructive arguments.

According to the analysis by the Kontext Institute, climate topics were overall less prominent last year than they were in 2023, as was noted on Tuesday at the presentation of the results during a press conference in Vienna. A search of the APA media database returned 9,020 relevant hits this time around – a decline of 13 per cent (2023: 10,329).

"An analysis of statements over the year shows that the (destructive, ed.) delay discourse rose proportionally from 16 to 28 per cent, while constructive contributions fell from 71 to 63 per cent," summarised economist Anna Pixer, one of the two study authors, describing the overall trend. With both EU and national parliamentary elections, 2024 was a "super election year" – something Katharina Rogenhofer from the Kontext Institute saw as one contributing factor.
