'Climate emergency': scientists sound the alarm once again

Thousands of scientists from around 150 countries are in agreement.


More needs to happen to protect the Earth. Otherwise, 'unspeakable human suffering' will soon be unavoidable.

Around two years after more than ten thousand scientists from roughly 150 countries jointly declared a global 'climate emergency', they have now reaffirmed it and called for immediate change.

These changes are more urgent than ever to protect life on Earth, according to an article published in the academic journal "BioScience". More than 2,800 additional signatories have since joined the original roughly 11,000 scientists, among them 871 researchers from German universities and institutes.

Since the original declaration of the 'climate emergency' in 2019, numerous events such as flood disasters, wildfires and heatwaves had made clear what the consequences would be if things on Earth simply continued as before, it was noted. In 2020, for example, it was the second hottest year since records began.
