"At some point we'll have 150 climate reporters", says Maria Scholl in conversation with us at the monthly meetup. That would correspond to the total number of journalists at the APA. The climate crisis will sustain itself as a journalistic topic, she says, as it becomes ever more relevant to society.
Maria Scholl has been Editor-in-Chief of the Austria Presse Agentur (APA) since October 2023. Before that, she served as deputy editor-in-chief and, together with her predecessor Johannes Bruckenberger, built up the APA's climate coverage. Since 2021, the APA has had a dedicated climate team, and recently introduced new offerings such as standardised climate data and imagery that moves away from stereotypical climate visuals.
The APA plans to build on this further this year with new offerings such as standardised climate data and its own "future images" — so that stereotypical climate visuals like the dried-up Zicksee no longer have to stand in for the whole story, as Scholl puts it.
