The Climate People's Initiative kicks off its signature phase on 28 August 2019 with Austria's largest climate alliance to date. The first goal is to collect 100,000 signatures in order to bring the initiative's demands before the National Council.
"Never before have we been faced with a greater challenge than the climate crisis. However, we can choose today to take the path towards a more sustainable, liveable and fairer future. We can only achieve this together. As the Climate People's Initiative, we want to unite the forces of the climate movement and build bridges! We are laying the foundation for the broadest and largest climate alliance in Austria," Katharina Rogenhofer, Spokesperson for the Climate People's Initiative
The climate crisis is the greatest challenge of the 21st century and its consequences are already being felt in Austria: local farmers are among the first to suffer from crop failures, the grim statistics on heat-related deaths are rising, and Austria is watching its glaciers melt away. Yet very few countries are taking their commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement seriously and are often ignoring scientific findings – this must finally come to an end!
At the heart of the Climate People's Initiative are four demands, developed together with experts from climate science, environmental NGOs, and other civil society organisations and associations. To ensure that climate protection must be considered in all laws and regulations, it should be more firmly anchored in the constitution and federal law. Furthermore, Austria should reduce the release of harmful greenhouse gases by at least half by 2030 and become climate-neutral by 2040. A binding and transparent CO2 law must create the necessary framework conditions for federal, state, and local governments as well as individual sectors! In addition, a fundamental eco-social tax and levy reform is being called for. The societal costs of climate destruction should be factored into economic considerations. This way, climate-friendly behaviour becomes cheaper and climate-damaging behaviour is reduced. Social security must be guaranteed through a climate bonus. Last but not least, Austrian transport and energy policy must undergo fundamental change. Citizens should have access to a well-developed and affordable local and long-distance public transport network, as well as regional renewable energy.
From 28 August, the People's Initiative will be available for signing at all public offices across Austria. The scientific community also supports the Climate People's Initiative – after all, it's about all of our futures! https://klimavolksbegehren.at/unterschreiben/
