Climate protection is a collective effort - Graz for a better climate

Climate change is in full swing. To maintain the high quality of life in Graz, we want to reduce emissions, strengthen community spirit and promote self-sufficiency. That's what the city's climate protection plan is there for.

The progress report on the climate protection planning process, adopted by the city council in December, shows that Graz is taking responsibility and consistently implementing measures for climate protection and climate change adaptation in a strategy-led manner.

The City of Graz has developed a comprehensive climate protection plan. In March 2022, an important milestone was reached with the city council's resolution: a comprehensive CO2 balance was drawn up, which serves as the basis for the climate targets. Based on this opening balance, measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are being developed – with the aim of making the entire city area climate-neutral by 2040.

The plan covers the following areas:

  • Part A focuses on decarbonising the City of Graz organisation through measures such as expanding photovoltaic installations and building renovations.
  • Part B aims to make the entire city area climate-neutral by creating framework conditions such as expanding public transport.
  • Part C promotes climate-friendly living and doing business in Graz, by motivating citizens and
businesses to actively participate in climate protection through the "Climate Pact for Graz #bindabei".

Over 50 businesses and around 200 citizens have joined the Climate Pact #bindabei in recent weeks at graz.at/klimapakt.
