Climate researcher makes a striking comparison in the debate about flying

Helga Kromp-Kolb: "Just as we once asked our parents: what was it like under National Socialism — what did you know?"


The school holidays are just around the corner, and as every year, hundreds of thousands of Austrians will be jetting off on holiday. Timed perfectly with the start of the holiday season, Austrian climate researcher Helga Kromp-Kolb has sparked a fresh debate about flying. In an interview with the "Krone", the scientist from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna was asked whether we should be flying at all. Her answer: "You should think carefully about whether it's really necessary.

 

Because just as we asked our parents: what was it like under National Socialism? What did you know? What did you do? In the same way, our children and grandchildren will one day ask us: what was it like with the climate? What did you know? What did you do? If I were to answer: I flew to London on a shopping trip anyway — that wouldn't be a very good answer."
