79 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents were emitted in Austria in 2015, which amounts to around 9.1 t per citizen. However, to determine the actual consumption-based national CO2 emissions, the burdens from imported consumer goods must be added and the exports of domestic production subtracted — until now no easy undertaking.
The authors of the climAconsum study (IIÖ - Institut für industrielle Ökologie, Joanneum Research, Rütter Soceco, treeze, Bundessparte Industrie) have, over the past three years and with financial support from the Climate and Energy Fund, calculated the greenhouse gas balance of national consumption using around 1,000 product groups with the help of country-specific LCA (life cycle assessment) data.
As part of the symposium, they'll be presenting their findings to a broad audience. From these, it's possible to derive not only recommendations for consumption itself, but also for strengthening Austria as a production location — because domestic manufacturing of goods shows excellent performance in terms of CO2 intensity.
