The years between 2015 and 2025 were the hottest since records began. According to the World Meteorological Organization WMO, human-made greenhouse gases are causing a massive energy imbalance. Yet there remains a glimmer of hope.
When it comes to the state of the global climate, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) currently sees little room for optimism. The imbalance between the Earth's energy intake and output is growing rapidly, as stated in the WMO's State of the Climate report 2025. Negative records are tumbling one after another across climate indicators. Temperatures are rising, the oceans are warming, ice and glaciers are melting, and greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere continue to climb.
"It cannot be denied that these indicators are not moving in a direction that gives great cause for hope," said WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett. UN Secretary-General António Guterres spoke of an emergency: "Planet Earth is being pushed to its limits."
