"Climate Twin" – Interactive Map Shows Climate Warming in Cities

Under the motto "Find your location's climate twin", the website of the ARD news programme "Tagesschau" invites you to enter your home location on an online map to find out how hot it could get there by 2080. The visualisation of the "climate twin" scenario then assigns the relevant reference city. The digital quartet cards for each city also display current values for rainfall, heating days and cooling days for comparison.

The climate twin scenario is based on data from the IPCC. On this basis, researchers have developed scenarios for future temperature trends. These are computational models, and actual future changes may differ from them.

Based on the climate models, climate data for the year 2080 were modelled for 12,000 selected locations worldwide. Each of these locations was assigned a reference location that already exhibits exactly these climate data today. This means that the current temperature at the reference locations is comparable to what, according to the calculations, could become reality at the queried location by 2080.

As the basis for the climate modelling calculations, the warmest month with the highest average daily temperatures modelled for the period 2060 to 2080 is used for each location. The comparison data for the reference locations comes from the period 1960 to 1990. (<link http: klimawandelanpassung.at external-link-new-window internal link in current>klimawandelanpassung.at)
