Climate warming is a bigger concern for Austrians than Corona

Around 60 per cent want climate protection as a state objective enshrined in the constitution, a survey found. CO2 import tariffs and a kerosene tax also receive strong support.


It's not the Corona pandemic but rather global warming that continues to cause greater anxiety about the future among Austrians. In June, around 60 per cent of respondents in a survey said they supported enshrining climate protection as a national objective in the Federal Constitution. 57 per cent are in favour of greening the tax system.

Around a quarter of the more than 1,000 representative respondents doubt, however, that politicians will actually take concrete measures against climate change. "The survey results demonstrate a heightened sense of responsibility among Austrians. The number of those who want to take climate protection measures in their personal lives has increased compared to the previous year," explained study author Nina Hampl from the University of Klagenfurt.
