Consistent and transparent: University of Graz optimises reporting on its CO₂ balance

Using resources more sparingly, reducing one's own environmental impact, promoting sustainable mobility. In short: leading by example on the path towards climate neutrality. The University of Graz has been pursuing these goals consistently for years. Now it's setting another milestone. As the first university in Austria, it has established a software solution called the "Datawarehouse" that centrally collects and evaluates all data on environmental performance. This enables optimal monitoring and reporting as a basis for further improvements in the greenhouse gas balance and environmental management.

"The University of Graz is on its way to becoming one of the first climate-neutral universities in Austria. By 2030, the greenhouse gas emissions generated on campus are to be drastically reduced. The goal is to achieve genuine climate neutrality by 2040", says Rector Peter Riedler, looking ahead to the future. To achieve this, in 2019 a team led by climate researcher Gottfried Kirchengast established Institutional Carbon Management (ICM) with transparent greenhouse gas accounting. And since 2016, the University of Graz has been running a consistent environmental management system certified to EMAS and ISO 14001.
