In a recently published WIFO Research Brief, produced in cooperation with the Wegener Center (University of Graz), Angela Köppl, Stefan Schleicher, Margit Schratzenstaller and Karl Steininger outline climate policy options during and after the coronavirus crisis.
The coronavirus crisis has exposed systemic risks and the vulnerability of the economic system that come with the complexly interconnected global structures currently in place. This vulnerability exists not only in relation to pandemic events, but also applies to other potential disruptions, such as the foreseeable climate crisis. In this regard, it is now important, on the one hand, to make use of the heightened awareness of the vulnerability of our economic system — brought about by the now very real experience of the coronavirus pandemic — in the context of avoiding climate risks as well. On the other hand, government measures to address the coronavirus crisis should be designed in such a way that they also contribute to mitigating climate change and make our economic system less vulnerable.
