Since 1 January 2023, the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) and the Geological Survey of Austria (GBA) have been combining their expertise in the newly established GeoSphere Austria. The Director General of this "mammoth project" was officially appointed today, Monday, by Research Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP): Andreas Schaffhauser will head the scientific division and Sylvia Bauer-Beck the commercial division.
GeoSphere Austria's remit covers geology, geophysics, meteorology and climatology, encompassing both research and round-the-clock services such as weather forecasting. "GeoSphere Austria will be the new central competence centre of the federal government for questions in the areas of climate change and natural disasters," said Polaschek.
