Tropical temperatures in the east, mudslides in the west, and severe storms in the south: various extreme weather events within just a few days are no longer a rarity. Extreme weather disasters and the climate crisis are important election campaign topics. But how are the parties standing for election positioning themselves in this area? ORF's "Report" and ORF.at have been asking around.
For the ORF "Report" programme check, the available election manifestos and public statements from senior politicians were drawn upon. In addition, the parties standing nationwide were able to indicate on a scale of zero (not important) to ten (very important) how much relevance they assign to climate protection in their election manifesto. As a counterpoint, political adviser Thomas Hofer and political scientist Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle were asked for their expert assessments.
Seven out of nine parties and lists say that climate protection is at the top of their election manifesto. They gave themselves the maximum score of ten points. Only the SPÖ and the ÖVP rated its relevance lower: nine points for the Social Democrats, seven for the ÖVP. What's clear is that parties and lists view climate protection differently and link it to measures that align with their political orientation.
