The FFG has analysed Austria's successes and challenges in the EU programme "Horizon 2020" in its thematic dossier on climate-relevant research. According to the dossier, around 243 million euros in funding has so far been committed to Austria in the area of climate.
The experts in the "European and International Programmes" division at the FFG regularly take an in-depth analytical look at developments in "Horizon 2020" through their thematic dossiers, with the aim of providing a basis for political decision-making processes.
Overall, the thematic dossier shows that the ambitious target set by the European Parliament and the European Council — whereby spending on climate-relevant topics in "Horizon 2020" should account for 35 per cent of the total budget — has not yet been met: the current share stands at around 30 per cent. The majority of climate-relevant funding comes from the third "Horizon 2020" pillar (Societal Challenges), with thematic priorities focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
With regard to the ongoing discussions about the design and orientation of the next EU Framework Programme for Research (FP9), the thematic dossier recommends an impact-based approach that addresses all aspects of climate change and, alongside the promotion of technological solutions, also drives social innovation and the necessary societal transformation.
