Eurobarometer Survey: Climate Change is a Serious Problem and Should be Tackled More Quickly

According to a new Eurobarometer survey, 93 per cent of Europeans believe that climate change is a serious problem for the world. In Germany, 89 per cent of the population share this view. 60 per cent of Germans and more than half of Europeans (58 per cent) feel that the transition to a green economy should be accelerated. This is considered particularly necessary in light of energy price spikes and concerns about gas supplies following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

From an economic perspective, 73 per cent of Europeans estimate the costs of damages caused by climate change to be significantly higher than the investments required for the green transition. Three quarters (75 per cent) of Europeans also agree that climate protection measures will drive innovation.

Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, commented: "European citizens understand the threat posed by climate change and continue to support climate protection action by the EU, national governments, businesses, and individuals. They are aware of the long-term risks of the climate and biodiversity crisis, but also of the opportunities we have to shape a better, healthier, and safer future if we act now on the green transition. The results of this survey are a clear signal that there remains broad support for achieving the goals of the European Green Deal. It is up to politicians and decision-makers to heed this call."
