Südwind launched their campaign #climateofchange last week.
As part of the launch, a new survey was presented in which more than 22,000 young people across Europe were asked about the climate crisis, the economic system and climate-related migration. For Austria, the results show that young people take the climate crisis seriously, see major justice deficits in the economic system, and are open to welcoming people seeking protection from the impacts of climate change.
A brief excerpt: In Austria, more than half (55%) of young respondents see climate change as the greatest global challenge, followed by environmental destruction (44%). Three quarters (75%) believe that "we cannot maintain our consumption habits whilst also protecting the environment". Seven in ten (70%) think that the "economy in Austria is geared towards the benefit of the rich and powerful", and two thirds (66%) see business and industry as bearing the greatest responsibility for tackling the climate crisis. At the same time, 83 per cent say they will vote for politicians who prioritise the issues of climate change, migration, and climate migration.
In addition to the survey, we've worked together with partner organisations to develop a vision for a socially and ecologically just economy — you can find more info on that here.
I'm sending you a short survey summary report as an attachment — you can find further info and the full reports on our website:
