European Union: EU poorly prepared for climate change, experts warn


The European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change is urging that the EU must become more resilient through swift action. The focus is on climate protection and climate change adaptation.

Heatwaves, wildfires, flooding: according to climate researchers, the EU urgently needs to better prepare for the risks associated with climate change. In particular, the response to climate change must be better coordinated, warns the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change in a report.

"Weather- and climate-related extreme events are already causing severe losses across Europe", said German board chair Ottmar Edenhofer. "Extreme heat alone has led to tens of thousands of premature deaths in recent years." In addition to ecosystem damage, this is compounded by economic losses averaging around 45 billion euros per year — five times higher than in the 1980s.
