On 2 May 2024, a specialist symposium on food poverty in Austria took place, bringing together experts and interested parties. The focus was on current study findings from Gesundheit Österreich GmbH, the Competence Centre for Climate and Health, as well as contributions from the Poverty Conference, the University of Vienna, Tafel Österreich and the Participatory Supermarket (MILA).
Based on a representative survey in Austria, over 12 per cent of the population are affected by moderate or severe food poverty. This means that over the past 12 months they were uncertain whether they could afford sufficient quantities of healthy and fresh food. Tafel Österreich has also noted an increase in the number of clients. Food poverty represents a serious problem and particularly affects single parents, families, job-seekers/unemployed people, as well as people who are unable to work for health reasons. The conclusion is clear: measures are needed to make a healthy and climate-friendly diet more accessible for all people in Austria.
