This is shown by research on the Ödenwinkelkees glacier in the Weißsee area near Uttendorf (Pinzgau). More than one hundred and fifty years ago, the Ödenwinkelkees glacier above the Tauernmoos reservoir near Uttendorf completely filled the valley floor — to a depth of up to 80 metres. Now the glacier is increasingly retreating from hikers and researchers alike: within just five years, the ice margin pulled back by well over 200 metres — you now have to trek that distance across scree to reach the glacier gate.
"Intensified dynamics over the last five to ten years"
"Glaciers are fever thermometers that hold up an unvarnished mirror to what is happening temperature-wise in the Alpine region. Over the last five to ten years, we've definitely been observing an even more intense dynamic. It's really quite dramatic," says Bernhard Zagel, glacier researcher at the University of Salzburg.
