Global warming: the 1.5-degree threshold is getting closer

Can we still limit human influence on global warming to 1.5 degrees? It's going to be tight: we could cross the mark by 2025. The UN Paris Climate Agreement managed to set an ambitious target back in 2015: global warming since the beginning of the industrial age, to which humans have contributed significantly, should not exceed two degrees Celsius in terms of worldwide average temperature, and should if possible be stopped at 1.5 degrees.

Keeping warming as low as possible is enormously important: with every additional half degree, we metaphorically trigger avalanches that can no longer be stopped. This means that Earth's ecosystems are being increasingly and more severely impacted within a very short space of time and cannot adapt quickly enough. Effects such as the thawing of permafrost are setting further warming processes in motion and tipping points are being reached that make continued existence and recovery impossible in many cases.
