Globart scholarship programme from the Journalism Workshop for the "Days of Transformation"

Journalism Workshop against distrust: Knowledge remains power!

Globart scholarship programme for the "Days of Transformation"
24 to 27 October 2024 at Melk Abbey in cooperation with Bait and Digitaler Kompass

Which media do we actually trust? How do I spot fake news? When do I fall for reporting generated by artificial intelligence? And: How do I use distrust as a constructive force – and how does journalism that pushes back against this actually work?

This year's Globart scholarship programme is being shaped by the media start-up Bait and is funded by the Federal Chancellery as part of the project series "The Future is Fem:AI*le!" Bait was founded in 2022 by the media literacy organisation Digitaler Kompass and is the first participatory fact-checking channel directly on TikTok. The editors use video format to debunk misinformation circulating in the digital world whilst also providing the tools to independently identify false information. The emphasis is on the empowering feeling of self-determination.

In this journalism workshop, you'll learn from hands-on professionals how innovative journalism works. Ines Holzmüller, who co-founded the fact-checking platform "faktiv" at profil after many years there, leads the editorial team. She is supported by editor Iris Strasser, who co-founded the youth magazine Die Klette in 2017 and received the Austrian Youth Prize for "Journalistic Achievement" in 2019. Thematically, the workshop will focus on the inequalities and prejudices we encounter in the digital world – whether on social media or in artificial intelligence. On the first day, there will be input from expert Nina Dulcic (NGO Sprungbrett). In the following days, you'll work in groups together with the journalists from the Bait editorial team to create your own short videos and texts on the topic, which we'll then publish on our social media channels to reach other young people and raise their awareness of the issue.

Together with Bait, Globart is bringing an optimistic impulse to the "Days of Transformation" and – if you're between 18 and 30 years old and interested in journalism – giving you the opportunity in the scholarship programme Journalism Workshop against distrust: Knowledge remains power! to find out and try for yourself how news is made and how it can strengthen or undermine democratic processes.

What's included in the scholarship programme:
The scholarship includes participation in the workshop Journalism Workshop against distrust: Knowledge remains power! as well as participation in the programme of the "Days of Transformation", which in previous years has welcomed guests including philosophers Sonja Flaßpöhler and Eva von Redecker, migration researcher Judith Kohlenberger, economics journalist Ulrike Herrmann and artist Edgar Honetschläger. This year we welcome, among others, philosopher Maria-Luisa Frick, journalist and author Solmaz Khorsand, artist Judith Fegerl, musician Lukas Lauermann and numerous inspiring figures from civil society.

We at Globart will provide your accommodation for four nights (23 to 27 October 2024) in Melk as well as meals (vegetarian). Travel costs to Melk are to be covered by the scholarship holders themselves. Initial information about the "Days of Transformation" programme will be available from early July at globart.at.
