1,500 participants took part in the Graz climate survey, giving an insight into their living circumstances as well as their mobility and consumption behaviour through their responses.
The City of Graz conducted a comprehensive survey last year on the ecological footprint of Graz's population. The aim was to gain a detailed overview of the key CO2 emission areas and to raise awareness of environmentally friendly behaviour.
How do I heat my home? How do I live? How do I get around our city? Where and what do I shop for? The answers paint a picture of the emissions one generates and how one's own behaviour impacts the climate. Graz wanted to know the specifics, and so used an online Climate Check to survey the so-called consumption-based emissions of Graz residents. These also take into account the environmental impacts that arise outside the city's boundaries, such as the production of a smartphone.
Deputy Mayor Judith Schwentner: "1,500 participants clearly show that the topic of climate protection has long since become part of everyday life for the people of Graz. The data we've collected gives us a solid picture of their living circumstances. For us as a city, this is an essential foundation for continuing to improve the quality of life for our citizens and supporting them as best we can in adopting a climate-friendly lifestyle. Because only through collective effort will we achieve our climate targets and secure a liveable future."
The high level of participation enables a representative picture of consumption behaviour. The data was weighted by age, gender and education, and supplemented by an additional face-to-face survey of 100 randomly selected individuals.
