That's what the latest calculations from the Environment Agency Austria show. The latest calculations from the Environment Agency Austria for the so-called "nowcast" show: Austrian greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fell by around 6.4 per cent in 2022 compared to 2021. This corresponds to a reduction of 5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents. According to the preliminary figures, around 72.6 million tonnes of greenhouse gases were emitted in 2022.
The decline occurred despite significant economic growth across all sectors – including buildings, transport, agriculture, and industry. According to the preliminary data, this represents the lowest level of emissions since 1990.
"The latest calculations from the Environment Agency Austria show that for the first time, emissions are falling not just in forecasts but also in reality. This means our climate protection efforts are having an effect – with the KlimaTicket, the expansion of renewable energy, the renovation drive, industrial transformation, and the climate bonus, we've put many measures in place. We need to stay this course on climate protection. Because climate protection is a marathon – not a sprint," says Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler.
