Greenhouse gas emissions in Austria up by 3.2 per cent

Reasons include increased diesel sales and higher heating demand – European targets still met

Greenhouse gas emissions in Austria have risen again after several years. For 2015, the Environment Agency recorded 78.9 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, up 3.2 per cent from 2014. However, the upper limit set by the EU was not exceeded. For 2016, experts are not expecting a reversal of this trend. "On the positive side, emissions have been below the nationally and EU-legally defined upper limits since 2013.

Nevertheless, the rise in emissions is a concern for me," said Environment Minister Andrä Rupprechter (ÖVP) on Tuesday. "To achieve the Paris climate targets by 2030 and a long-term phase-out of fossil fuels, we need additional efforts." Austria will, however, play its part, and an integrated energy and climate strategy is currently being developed.
