With the "Images of Change", the US space agency NASA shows how dramatically the world is changing in the wake of the climate crisis — as seen from space. This is made particularly striking through comparison with earlier images.
The Earth is changing. Natural disasters are increasingly affecting the planet. These are symptoms of the climate crisis that every region of the world is feeling. On its homepage, NASA has now compiled before-and-after images under the title "Images of Change".
It is possible to observe how the permafrost is steadily retreating: glaciers have melted over the past few decades, huge chunks of ice are breaking away from the mainland and drifting out to sea. Groundwater levels are rising, which in turn is causing coastal flooding. On top of this come extreme rainy seasons and equally severe heatwaves. Wildfires and dried-up lakes stand in contrast to flooding.
