Improvements to the climate plan demanded

The alliance "Klimaschutz Jetzt", made up of regional ministers and scientists, has called for a major overhaul of the Austrian National Energy and Climate Plan (NEKP).


"The draft is completely inadequate," criticised regional Environment Minister Rudi Anschober (Greens) at a press conference today. Urgent measures would need to be implemented by the current caretaker government without delay.

According to the alliance, Austria is far from meeting the EU's target of a 36 per cent CO2 reduction by 2030 with its current climate plan. The Commission had also called for improvements in ten areas in its assessment of the NEKP. If the target is not met, Anschober warned that the Republic could face costs of up to 9.2 billion euros.
