In Spain, the race against time begins

The participants of the UN Climate Conference in Madrid are under considerable pressure. They must develop international rules for dealing with greenhouse gas emissions and damage caused by extreme weather — and are far from being in agreement on how to do so.


When Spain's acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez steps before the press this Monday, he'll likely rally the world around a race against time. "Tiempo de actuar" — time to act — is the motto of the 25th UN Climate Conference (COP 25), taking place in Madrid from 2 to 13 December.

The city has already completed the first sprint. It was only at the end of October that Spain offered to host the conference, after Chile had to pull out due to social protests in the country.

Now the new hosts want to see results. We are at a "decisive moment", Sánchez tweeted on Thursday. "Let's act ambitiously now." Global climate negotiations are entering a new phase in Madrid, says Spain's Environment Minister Teresa Ribera.
