In the face of devastating wildfires, heatwaves, and storms in many parts of the world, the United Nations has expressed deep concern. "Climate change is here. It is terrifying," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, after it became clear yesterday that July would likely be the hottest month globally since records began. According to the new head of the UN climate panel (IPCC), Jim Skea, it's clear that the Paris climate targets will no longer be met. Even so, the fight against CO2 emissions is still worth the effort.
Governments had not taken measures ambitious enough to implement the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. "That is absolutely certain," said the Briton, who had only been elected IPCC chair the day before. He succeeds South Korean Hoesung Lee. Skea prevailed in the election against candidates from Brazil, South Africa, and Belgium.
