Whether through arable farming, deforestation, or development: humans have reshaped and transformed the earth's land surfaces in a way that no other creature has before. A new special report from the IPCC now addresses the consequences this has for climate change and how warming can be countered through changes in land use. In it, the scientists make clear, among other things, that agriculture, forestry, and other forms of human land use are responsible for a total of 23 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. This means, amongst other things, that climate protection targets such as limiting global warming to 1.5 or two degrees will be virtually impossible to achieve without changes to land use.
